Becoming a licensed land surveyor in Texas
Texas licensing starts with Surveyor in Training (SIT) certification, which can be reached by five education and experience paths.
Getting licensed in Texas
Applicants must pass the NCEES Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) exam before applying for SIT certification.
After passing the NCEES Principles and Practice of Surveying (PS) exam, an SIT may apply to take the Texas Specific Surveying Exam (TSSE) for RPLS registration.
The RPLS application requires experience records and three references from licensed or registered professional land surveyors.
Registered professional land surveyors need 12 hours of continuing education per renewal cycle, at least three of them in ethics.
TBPELS says the 2026 renewal period opens November 1 and closes December 31.
