102 Texas counties have no surveying firm
Of Texas's 254 counties, 102 have no office of a surveying firm registered with the state board. About 851,000 Texans live in them. The largest is Coryell County, population 86,370.
Harris, 5,009,302Loving, 48
Statewide there are 3.6 registered firm offices per 100,000 residents (1,112 offices, 31,290,831 people). Among counties of 100,000 people or more, Potter has the fewest per resident (0.9 per 100,000) and Comal the most (9.4). A firm office is where a firm is registered to work from, not where its surveyors go: a license covers all of Texas, and firms cross county lines every day. The gap is in local offices, not in legal coverage.

Questions
How many Texas counties have no surveying firm?
102 of Texas's 254 counties have no office of a surveying firm registered with the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. About 851,000 people live in them (Census 2024 estimates).
Which is the largest Texas county without a surveying firm?
Coryell County, with 86,370 residents in the Census 2024 estimate. 9 counties of 20,000 people or more have none: Coryell, Hale, Titus, Houston, Moore, Hockley, Jones, Freestone, Willacy.
Can I still get a survey if my county has no surveying firm?
Yes. A Texas surveyor's license covers the whole state, and firms in a neighboring county often work across the line. Expect travel time in the quote. Check any surveyor's license on the TBPELS roster before you hire.
How old is the surveying profession in Texas?
Of 2,662 registered professional land surveyors on the board's roster, 850 (32%) were first licensed before 2001 and 533 (20%) before 1991. The median surveyor was licensed in 2007.

Method and sources
- Firm offices: the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors (TBPELS) surveying firm roster, read October 6, 2026. Each registered firm office counts once, branch offices included; 1,128 offices are on the roster.
- County: each office's registered address placed with the U.S. Census Bureau geocoder, or its ZIP code centre where the address would not place, on October 7, 2026. 1,112 of 1,128 offices were placed; the other 16 are left out, so a county count is a floor.
- Population: U.S. Census Bureau, Vintage 2024 county population estimates (co-est2024-alldata.csv, July 1, 2024 estimate), downloaded October 7, 2026.
- License years: the Granted date on the TBPELS RPLS roster (read October 6, 2026) for every surveyor whose status is Registered. Inactive, retired and expired licenses are left out.
